FRANCO, Niccolò (1505-1569). Le Pistole vulgari. Venice: Antonio Gardane, 20 April 1539.

2° (291 x 189mm). Xylographic title within a fine architectural and historiated woodcut border, large device on last page. (Wormholes on title repaired slightly affecting border, slight worming in last 3 leaves affecting some letters.) Early 19th-century Italian calf-backed boards, gilt spine.

FIRST EDITION of Franco's pistole volgari, the last of which, a la invidia, caused a bitter quarrel between Franco and Aretino who considered it to have been directed against himself. The quarrel reached its height when, some years later, Franco published the third edition of his Priapea which contains about two hundred sonnets, most of which were highly insulting to Aretino. He died in Rome where, after having published a foolish Latin epigram against Pius V, he was hanged at the order of that pope. Graesse II-628; Parenti 150; Gamba 1401.
