Decorated in gold, silver and iroe hiramakie, takamakie, togidashi and okibirame with volumes from the Tale of Genji including "Suma", "Wakamurasaki", "Kiritsubo" and "Suetsumu-hana" on gold hirame ground, the inner tray decorated similarly with a terrace overlooking the water and the full moon in silver, mura-nashiji interiors

Lot Essay

The scene depicted on the inner tray is the terrace of the Ishiyama Temple on the Lake Biwa where Lady Murasaki, the author of the Tale of Genji, was purported to have been engaged in writing under the full moon
