Lot Essay

In 1820, following the accession of her estranged husband George IV; formerly the Prince Regent, Caroline resolved to return to England and claim her right as Queen. The picture shows the scene at Dover as Caroline arrived, landing in an open boat because of the swell. She was cheered by the people and a canon was fired in honour of her arrival.
