Lot Essay

A closely related salver or plate stand for a sideboard-table, with richly carved front, is illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1954 (rev. ed.), p.164, fig.3). Sometimes these stands were made in sets to take salvers of different sizes on a sideboard.
