A CHINESE ENGRAVED BRASS-MOUNTED BLACK AND GILT-LACQUER COFFER-ON-STAND
Late 17th Century, the stand 19th Century and English
Mounted overall with foliate-engraved lock-plates and corner-plates, the moulded rectangular hinged top decorated with a mountainous landscape with chinoiserie figures in a building by a lake and deer, the interior lined in gilt-lacquer and with a later oak false bottom, the front with fighting elephants and a mahout amidst trees and buildings, the sides with carrying-handles, the stand with foliate-decorated frieze on short square cabriole legs and squared feet

Possibly the 'Indian chest' listed in the Great Parlour Chamber in the 1702 inventory of Wotton, Surrey, for the diarist John Evelyn (d.1705)
