Lot Essay

The present picture is to be compared in handling with paintings by van Dyck thought to have been executed between 1618-20 when a studio was recorded as being in operation. It can be compared to his painting of the same subject, in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent (see E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony van Dyck, Germany, 1988, II, p. 122, no. 296, illustrated I, pl.6).

The landscape may be the work of a collaborator.
