The cover formed of the upper third, silver bands above and below, the top in the form of a hemispherical amber bead with inset central diamond, the base fitted with a removable cylindrical inkwell, the exterior with an overall mother-of-pearl fish-scale pattern, slight loss and restoration in one area at base, one silver mount with crude brass replacement

Lot Essay

A similar pencase in the Khalili Collection was recently exhibited: Empire of the Sultans -- Ottoman Art from the Collection of Nasser D Khalili, exhibition catalogue, Geneva, 1995, no.111, p.170. The note to that entry mentions two further unpublished examples in the Turk ve Islam Museum, Istanbul, inv. nos. 4038 and 4040.
