Lot Essay

Louise-Elisabeth of France (1727-1759), the eldest daughter of King Louis XV and his wife Maria Leszczynska, was called Madame Première, in order to differentiate her from her twin sister Henriette, called Madame Seconde. She was the favourite daughter of Louis XV and the only one to find a husband. Through her marriage to the Infant Don Philip of Bourbon, the third son of King Philip V of Spain, she became Infant of Spain and later Duchess of Parma.
We are indebted to Pierre Papeloux, Paris, for the identification of the sitter.
