Lot Essay
John Augustus Hervey (1757-1796), eldest son of the 4th Earl of Bristol: entered the Royal Navy and served on H.M.S. Viper Sloop 1780; 1781 H.M.S. Recovery; 1782 H.M.S. Raisonable and was killed in action on H.M.S. Raisonable in 1796. He married Elizabeth (d. 1818), daughter of Colin Drummond of Quebec in 1779. She married secondly Lord Seaford (d. 1845) leaving other issue Charles Augustus who succeeded his great-grandfather as Lord Howard de Walden.
Cosway painted another portrait of Lord Hervey which is now owned by the National Trust at Ickworth, Suffolk. Another portrait of Lord Hervey by John Smart, dated 1782 was sold in these rooms, 11 May 1994, lot 88.
