Lot Essay

Franz (1768-1835), eldest son of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II, succeeded his father in 1792 as Holy Roman Emperor under the name of Franz II. In 1805, he adopted the title of Emperor of Austria, as Franz I. He was the brother of Archdukes Ferdinand and Charles (see lots 34 and 58).
