Lot Essay

Louis Charles Bernacchi, O.B.E., F.R.G.S., Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, was a scientist and an explorer. He was a physicist to the Southern Cross Antarctic Expedition in 1898 and the Antarctic Expedition of 1901-4 under Captain Scott. He received various medals including the Royal Geographical Medal and The King's Antarctic Medal and was Member of Council for the Royal Geographical Society, 1929-31. He travelled extensively to such places as British Namaqualand, German S.W. Africa (1905), Primeval Forests of Peru (Upper Amazon Basin, 1906), Central Borneo and other remote parts of the world. His publications include 'To the South Polar Regions', 1901; 'A Very Gallant Gentleman (No Surrender Oates), 1933; 'Saga of the "Discovery"', 1938 and various articles in scientific journals.
