Lot Essay

Painted at Eastwell Park, Ashford, Kent and begun in May 1903, this commission came through Lord Scarborough, Lady Gerard's nephew by marriage, whom Orpen had painted in December 1902. Orpen wrote to his wife Grace, 'They think Lady Gerard's portrait is very like her, which is lucky!' (B. Arnold op. cit.).
