Lot Essay

This model derives from the Louis XVI Pendule de Voyage or de Campagne, which was often mounted with enamelled Sèvres plaques. A mantel clock of related form with enamelled plaques by Jean Coteau (maître in 1778) from the collections of Lord Hillingdon, then Sir Philip Sassoon, was sold by the Marquess of Cholmondeley in these Rooms, 'Works of Art from Houghton', 8 December 1994, lot 46. A further example is in the Jones Collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIIIe siècle, Cahors, 1987, p.48).
