Woven in wools and silks, depicting a meandering path in a forest landscape with a thistle in the left foreground and a town in the distance to the right, within a brown border with scrolling foliage and strapwork, within a later blue outer slip, reduced in height, minor areas of re-weaving and patching

Lot Essay

The borders of this tapestry closely relate to a tapestry depicting the rape of Europa and signed by Philip Behagle, sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 1 November 1989, lot 209, and then in these Rooms, 9 December 1993, lot 378. They further relate to the borders of a tapestry depicting Mecury presenting the infant Bacchus to the Nymphs of Nysa, from the property of Major Sir Hugh Cholmeley, Bt., D.S.O., removed from Easton Hall, sold in these Rooms, 27 May 1948, lot 170.
