Lot Essay

The borders of this tapestry relate to the borders on a series of the History of Constantin, after Rubens, woven between 1622 and 1627 in Paris in the manufactory of Raphaël de La Planche in the faubourg Saint-Germain (illustrated in M. Fenaille, Etat Général des Tapisseries de la Manufacture des Gobelins, Paris, 1923, opposite p. 250). They further closely relate to a series of Ariane, after Claude Vignon (d. 1670), woven after 1639 in Paris and illustrated in M. Fenaille, op.cit., p. 367, from which one tapestry was sold anonymously, Sotheby's Monaco, 3 March 1990, lot 269.
