A BRUSSELS MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY
Mid-17th Century
Woven in wools and silks, of the Olympic Games, depicting figures in a landscape, with Hellandica seated on plinth in the centre awarding the garland of wild olive and surrounded by further maidens and children, to the left with a couple observing and to the right with an elder seated on a throne and crowning a youth with a laurel wreath and with further figures carrying wreaths, the background with various wrestling males before the circular temple of Zeus Olympius with the statue of Zeus by Phidias, and flanked by a statue at Hercules, reduced in height, lacking borders, minor areas of re-weaving
