AN ITALIAN GILTWOOD CONSOLE TABLE
Mid-18th Century, Possibly Piedmontese
The shaped moulded rectangular breccia marble top above a pierced and foliate frieze with tied ribbons and acanthus leaf festoons centred by C-scrolls and foliate cabochons, the sides conformingly decorated on C-scroll legs headed by floral husk and terminating on scrolled leaves with an asymmetrical rocaille and foliate stretcher, the reverse of one leg indistinctively inscribed, re-gilt, restorations, the marble restored and one angle repaired

Lot Essay

This console table with its tied ribbons on the pierced frieze and its boldly scrolling cabriole legs is related to a pair of console tables in the Palazzo Reale, Genova, which has a similar tied ribbon to the centre of the pierced frieze and has closely related legs (L. Canonero, Baroccheto Genovese, Milano, 1962, plate CXIX).
