A signed and dated Rockingham plaque painted by Thomas Steel
1830
Painted with a group of fruit and flowers, including roses and moss-roses, heather, plums, forget-me-nots, peaches, tulips, grapes and dahlias (slight chip to bottom right hand corner, slight wear), printed red griffin and ROCKINGHAM WORKS BRAMELD mark, signed in red script to the reverse upper right hand corner T. Steel. Pinxt.

Lot Essay

Cf. Margaret Vivian, Antique Collecting, p. 140, fig. 106 for another plaque by Steel also signed and dated 1830. A.A. Eaglestone and T.A. Lockett, The Rockingham Pottery (1964), illustrates a tray by Steel, pl. IV(b).

It is known that Thomas Steel was at the Rockingham factory in 1830, although it is not known how long he worked there.
