Lot Essay

Twenty-one photographs of Lucknow after the mutiny of 1857 by Robertson and Beato, these with printed title labels and numbers in the negatives. The presence of the printed titles and numbers, and of the copied signature in one print, suggests these may be copy prints made for sale in London rather than prints made in India. One portrait of Sir James Outram follows the Indian views and precedes the remaining photographs which are views and portraits relating to the 1868 Abyssinian Campaign by the Royal Engineers. This group includes topographical views, camp life, military groups and other portraits including 'Captain Speedy' and the young Abyssinian prince.
