Lot Essay

This press's sunk panels and richly-figured mahogany correspond to those of a pair of clothes-presses supplied in 1764 by Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) to Sir Lawrence Dundas at Aske Hall, Yorkshire (illustrated in C. Gilbert, Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, fig. 243). It relates to a pattern published in Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd. ed., 1762, pl. CXXIX. A clothes-press with similar panels and two short drawers was sold in these Rooms, 6 October 1994, lot 147.
