Lot Essay

Cf. the almost identical dish in the Princessehof Museum, Leeuwarden, illustrated by D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, op.cit., pl.311 and p.227, where the author says this depicts the story of Yang Hsiang, one of the twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety. The 'leaping boy' subject is well-known on both Japanese Kakiemon porcelain, and on European wares (notably from Bow and Chelsea); it is much rarer on Chinese export porcelain
