The caption above the figures can be translated as 'Our agreement is' and 'The view of our hospitable/hospital society' (The word 'sjukliga' is intentionally used as a pun). The inscriptions on the foot can be translated as 'No. 1 Pressed on to a plated pewter', possibly referring to the tankard the figure is holding, and 'No.2,3,4 For the amateurs of the same club'.
This bowl was made for The Syphilitic Society in Stockholm. The scene is probably set in the Jarnison Sjukhus, a well-known building which today serves as an administrative centre for hospitals in Stockholm and can be recognized by its distinctive windows. .
The only other known example with this design is a mug, which is in a private collection.
