Lot Essay

The present picture shows Madeleine, the artist's lover for many years and one of his favourite models during the 1930s. She tragically died young in 1936. Although already married to his new Japanese wife, Kimiyo, Foujita painted several portraits of Madeleine from memory after his return from Japan to Paris in May 1939.
