8° (196 x 124mm). Half-title, final blank leaf. (Rather spotted.) Contemporary half calf, gilt ornaments on spine (slight wear to head and foot of spine). Provenance: Princess A.P. Golitsyna [Galitsine] (heraldic stamp).
FIRST EDITION. Written while the author was exiled to his estate the work was finished on 7 November 1825, but with difficulties with the censor was not published until 22-23 December 1830 in an edition of at least 2,000 copies. It is one of the first attempts at romantic tragedy in the Russian language. Kilgour 884; Smirnov-Sokol'skii Pushkin 25 (stating that it is the rarest of Pushkin's first editions); Biblioteca 1011.
