MAZARIN, Cardinal Jules [Giulio Raimondo Mazzarini] (1602-1661). Autograph letter signed to Giovanni Battista Doni in Florence, Paris, 23 August 1647, in Italian, praising Doni and assuring him of his esteem as he renews the glory of the music of the ancients and continuing 'L'Opera che ella ha' composta sopra l'eccellenza di essa è degno porto del suo intelleto,' 1 page on a bifolium with integral autograph address leaf, folio, (331 x 227mm.), written on paper made for Mazarin watermarked with his arms and monogram also with the papermakers' mark 'ASB'.
This letter is written to the renowned classicist and theorist Doni only months before he died suddenly in Florence on 1 December 1647, rendering him unable to accept Mazarin's offer of a 'prompt and agreeable willingness towards any of your future desires.' Mazarin was a keen advocate of Italian opera and a patron of Italian musicians and theorists during his rule of France.
