Lot Essay

The lithograph depicts a scene from the pantomime ballet, the Bal des Quatr'z'Arts, in which Emilienne d'Alençon and Mariquita played leading roles. The première was at the Folies Bergère on 16 December 1893, and the lithograph was reproduced in L'Escarmouche, No. 6, the following day. The artist also made a lithograph of these actors in a dress rehearsal for the pantomime (see lot 721).
