Lot Essay

This set of bronzes must originally have adorned a larger ensemble, possibly a piece of furniture. The twisted poses are reminiscent of mannerist figures such as the Sitzender Mann in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum (illustrated in U. Berger and V. Krahn, Bronzen der Renaissance und des Barock, Braunschweig, 1994, no. 36); however, details such as the integral octagonal socle and the garland suggest a later date of production.
