Lot Essay

First definitely recorded in 1665, the Dancing Faun, together with the Medici Venus, was arguably the most admired of all the classical statues hoarded together in the Tribuna of the Uffizi (Haskell and Penny, loc. cit.). Righetti's catalogue lists the 'Faune aux palets de Florence', which cost 18 zecchini, the sculptor's standard price for single figures.
