Lot Essay

Sir Denis Mahon and Nicholas Turner both confirmed the attribution and dated the drawing to the early 1640s.
The refined handling of the chalk is comparable with that of a drawing of God the Father at Windsor, which is for the Annunciation of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan datable to 1638-9, D. Mahon and N. Turner, The Drawings of Guercino in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle, London, 1989, no. 96, pl. 101.
