Lot Essay

The print engraved after this drawing is inscribed 'Eques Carolus Maratta invent'. The drawing is dated by Stella Rudolph to the 1690s and must date before 1711 when Faustina Maratta, who listed prints after her father's works, included that of Ercole Procaccini. David McTavish proposes that Procaccini used a more finished drawing for the print rather than the present one, Toronto, loc. cit., p. 108, illustrated.
