Soon after Le Brun's death, the surintendant des Bâtiments seized the contents of the artist's studio. Despite his widow's protestations, the royal administration claimed that Le Brun had been favoured as Premier Peintre du Roi, an honour which entailed the contents of the artist's studio to the crown. This explains why the Louvre owns the largest group of drawings by Le Brun, leaving very few sheets outside France.
