Lot Essay

It is probable that the cup was a gift from Josiah Guest to John, 2nd Marquess of Bute (1793-1848). It was at this time that Lord Bute was involved in extensive building works in Cardiff where he had considerable interests, including the land at Dowlais leased by the Guest family for the Dowlais Iron Works.
