Lot Essay

The dress was formerly identified as Sevillian and the picture was attributed to Zurburan in 1931. James Laver recognised the dependance on Hollar's etching from the sale of the Four Seasons (P., Penn. 609). Datable to 1643-4, this has a view of Cornhill, London, in the background; there are minor differences in the drapery (R.T. Godfrey, Wenceslaus Hollar, A Bohemian Artist in London, Yale, 1994, pp. 79-81, no. 44D).
