Lot Essay

See the note to lot 72.

The mother and child in the present picture closely resemble those in A young Boy leaving the Harem for the first time, in the Calkoen Bequest at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (see All the paintings of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Amsterdam, 1976, p. 746, no. A 2005). The present picture is of similar size and format to others by the artist: see, for example, the Portrait of Mehmed Kâhya, the Portrait of Sultan Ahmed III, the Dervish and the Turkish Woman at her Embroidery Frame, also in the Rijksmuseum (op. cit., pp. 743-6, nos. A 2013, A 2026, A 2030 and A 2042).
