Lot Essay

These pictures are reduced versions with slight differences to the pair in the Royal Collection, both signed and dated 1742 and measuring 94½ x 62in. (see O. Millar, The Tudor, Stuart and Early Georgian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, 1963, I, no. 536 and 537, II, pls. 187 and 189).
Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), was the eldest son of King George II, who he predeceased by fifteen years. He formed a notable collection of pictures and married Augusta of Saxe-Gotha (1719-1772), daughter of King Frederick II of Saxe-Gotha, in 1736.
