Lot Essay

The chair's splat relates to that of chair patterns, incorporating Gothic elements, published in Robert Manwaring's The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion of 1765 and his The Chair-Maker's Guide of 1766. It also appears on a set of chairs from The Samuel Messer Collection sold in these Rooms, 5 December 1991, lot 123, and another set sold from the collection of The Earl of Iveagh, Elveden Hall, Thetford, Christie's house sale, 21-24 May 1984, lot 455.
