Lot Essay
A set of hall chairs, with straight rather than compass-fronted seats, supplied by George Nix in 1730 for Ham House, Surrey correspond to the right-hand pattern of these chairs (P. Thornton, 'The Furnishing and Decoration of Ham House', Furniture History, Leeds, 1980, fig. 152).
A similar set of brown-painted hall chairs painted with the arms of the Earls of Romney, were sold from the collection of David Style, Esq., Wateringbury Place, Maidstone, Kent, Christie's house sale, 31-2 June 1978, lot 80 and a further pair from the same set were sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 10 April 1986, lot 22.
