The Astolabe and Zélée, under the command of Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), circumnavigated the globe in the years 1837 to 1840. The principal object of the voyage was exploration of the antarctic but en route they visited the Fiji and Pelew islands, New Guinea and Borneo. Dumont d'Urville received the gold medal of the French Société de Géographie in 1841. He died in a railway accident, with his wife and son, on 8th May 1842.
