Lot Essay

The figures are taken from Pellion's watercolour "visite chez Mr J.M. Tielman". The present watercolour was executed after the voyage by a professional artist in preparation for Piot's engraving. This is confirmed by the inscription on the engraving 'dessiné par Chasselat d'après A. Pellion'. The watercolour shows Madame Tielman, the Dutch Government Secretary's wife, listening to the young harpist described by Rose Freycinet in her Journal.
