Gouache on paper, a group of dervishes dance on a blue carpet beneath awnings while others stand around watching, one with a drum, another playing a stringed instrument bearing the signature Tara, some faces repainted, flaking
Miniature 8½ x 5¼in. (21.5 x 13.5cm.)

Lot Essay

The signature Tara is that of an artist active at the court of Akbar; however, the quality of the present lot suggests a provincial rather than a court artist. The name is a play on the name of the stringed instrument, the Tar.
