Lot Essay

This leaf comes from a manuscript, the bulk of which, including 36 miniatures, was formerly in the Victor de Goloubew Collection (Schulz, P.W.: Die persisch-islamisch Miniaturmalerei, Leipzig, 1914, I, p.87 and II, pls.38-45). Now in the Chester Beatty Library, it only retains 19 miniatures (The Chester Beatty Library: A Catalogue of the Persian Manuscripts, I, Dublin, 1959, p.68). The original colophon, which is now missing, gave the place of manufacture as Isfahan; were it not for this fact, Shiraz would normally be considered the place of origin.
It appears to be the prototype of what has come to be known as the "Brownish" style. See also Lot 117
Another miniature from this manuscript is in the Keir Collection (Robinson, B.W. (et. al.): Islamic Painting and the Arts of the Book, London, 1976, no.III.132, pp.162-3 and pl.37).
