Of conical form on short foot, the cream interior painted with a continuous line of extremely elegant angular kufic in brown slip, exterior plain, repaired breaks, slight losses

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: al-hurru hurrun wa 'in massahul'l-durr, ("The free man is free, even if touched by harm".)

This saying of the imam 'Ali occurs on a number of slip-painted wares of Nishapur (Goushani, A: Inscriptions on Nishapur Pottery, Teheran, 1986, nos.1, 21, 35, 50, 63, 91, 109 and 131).
