Lot Essay

Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was one of the most eminent literary characters of the 18th Century. In 1747 he began his great work 'A Dictionary of the English Language'. His edition of Shakespeare was published in 1765 and his last work of note the 'Lives of the Poets' was completed in 1781.
