With a hinged scallop shell enclosing a fitted interior with inkwell and sander, supported by an addorsed dolphin, on a sunburst and square griotte marble base, above a stepped plinth

Lot Essay

There is a very similar inkstand in the Ashmolean Museum, illustrated in N. Penny, Catalogue of European Sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 1992, vol. II, p. 202, cat. no. 415).
A further similar inkstand was offered anonymously in these Rooms, 16 November 1995, lot 1.
