An early lantern clock
17th Century
The brown-lacquered brass case etched with asanoha pattern, on four stump feet and with a metal loop for carrying or wall suspension, the black double chapter with the twelve zodiacal signs in the outer ring and numerals in the inner, in gold lacquer, an inner revolving disk with a pointer in the shape of a sun with rays which revolves round the hour circle, and a small circular opening to show the phases of the moon; the clockwork of iron and the going train with a single balance with adjustable small weights on a toothed rack, the half-hourly striking mechanism with a deep bell having an inner projecting rim and held in position by a wrought iron ornamental nut with three wings, (slight old wear)
