Lot Essay

As Hayes points out, this drawing is unusual in Gainsborough's art in being such an accurate, close up and detailed representation of its subject, a Suffolk-type wheel plough. This type of plough was later to be depicted by John Constable. For a similar drawing of the same date in the late 1750s, see lot 5.
