DIANA SPERLING (1791-1862)
LOTS 61-67
The following seven watercolours by Diana Sperling originally came from an album inscribed 'Diana Sperling/Dynes Hall, 1831/Isabella Silver'. The album must have been given by the artist to Isabella Silver who was a lifelong friend. Diana Sperling came from a family of local landowners in and around the parish of Great Maplestead which is on the Essex-Suffolk boundary. They lived at Dynes Hall which the family had bought in 1765. The estate had a fine park and five hundred acres.
Diana Sperling's known work consists of three albums of watercolours, many of which are reproduced in G. Manay's, Mrs. Hurst Dancing and other Scenes from Regency Life 1812-1823', London, 1981. It is clear from the albums that she was closely involved with family life and reflected William Hazlitt's observation that 'A young lady of fashion who has to devote so many hours of the day to music, so many to dancing, so many to drawing, so many to French, Italian, etc., does not pass her time in idleness'.
