Lot Essay

The Grecian bust of the 'Indian or Bearded' Bacchus, was introduced by the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d.1831) in the hermed pilasters of a low French-style press or cabinet in which he displayed some of his Grecian 'Bacchanalian' vases at his Duchess Street mansion/museum. The Duchess Street 'Columbarium' room together with two details of this particular bust were illustrated in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1807 (pls. III and LVII). The Hope bust is likely to have been executed by the London-based French bronze-founder Alexis de Caix, whose work he praised in Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. This pattern of Bacchus bust also featured on the Carlton House bookcases supplied in 1806 by Marsh and Tatham of Mount Street to the Prince of Wales, later King George IV. One of these bookcases was offered anonymously in these Rooms, 9 July 1992, lot 132.
