Lot Essay
There is a similar pair of hall chairs in the collection of the Earl Cawdor at Cawdor Castle, Nairn, Scotland (illustrated in Lord Cawdor, Cawdor Castle, Guidebook, 1992), and a set of three related stools at Ham House, Richmond (P. Thornton and M. Tomlin, 'The Furnishing and Decoration of Ham House', Furniture History, Leeds, 1980, fig. 170). These saddle-seated chairs have X-shaped and pattera-enriched frames corresponding to those on a pair of stools which were formerly at Rudding Park, Yorkshire and were sold by Captain Sir Everard Radcliffe, Bt., M.C, in these Rooms, 16 October 1972, lot 4.
