Lot Essay
The form of the reed-capped columnar legs enriched with flutes features on a Carlton House writing-table that is reputed to have been presented by George IV, when Prince Regent to the Court Tailor, and sold by his descendant, J.N. Colson, Esq., Sotheby's London, 19 April 1968, lot 306. It was sold again anonymously, Christie's New York, 27 January 1990, lot 180 (see also note to lot 33 in this sale). The legs are headed by sunk-tablet panels that feature on a Carlton House writing-table from the collection of Earl Poulett, Hinton House, Somerset, sold Sotheby's London, 1 November, 1968, lot 108.
